We had our annual visit to the Pediatric Cardiologist this morning for Morgan. It was just a follow up appointment.
**Following up from February 2009. Morgan was born (June 2008) with a small hole in her heart. It's called a VSD -Ventricular septal defect. It is supposed to close on its own by the time she turns 2. When she was born, it was measured at approximately 6mm. Feb of 2009, it measured at 3mm.
Today, Morgan had an EKG done and then the doctor came in to visit with us. He asked us some basic questions, "have you had any issues since you were last here; any hospitalizations, non-breathing episodes, blue lips, anything like that?" Um, those aren't you're everyday basic questions. But those there the things I was told to watch out for last year when we last saw the heart doc. So, the answer is no, none of those issues. Yes, the regular pedi is happy with Morgan's growth curve. Yes, Morgan has gained weight.
We did not do an ultrasound of the heart, how they measure the size of the VSD, but the doc could still hear it, very loudly. (The louder the murmur, the smaller the hole - it's a good thing.) He estimated it to be about 2-3mm in size. We will go back again next February and for sure have an ultrasound at that time. I asked the doctor if the hole should have closed up by now? "Usually by the time the child is 2," but Morgan isn't 2 yet. The doctor is not worried about this small hole because 1) it is small, 2) it is not causing any growth delays, and 3) it's not causing any breathing (or lack of) spells.
So for now we again watch out for slow growth, blue lips, difficulty breathing, lack of breathing, getting out of breath faster than normal; things like that. And we go back next year.
**BTW - Morgan weighs 24 pounds and is 33 3/4" long. AND SHE'S WALKING! (more on that in another post)
